JUST PAINTING- The Secret Joy of Yeung Tong Lung’s oil paintings

Yeung Tong Long regards the people and things around him as a point of inquiry into the language of painting. In this endless road of twists and turns, each corner comes as a surprise. All kinds of inertia and prejudice about looking will only inspire him to find a new direction. He will keep a mindful distance from words like “challenge” or “subversion”. He just wants to look quietly at the world and his paintings, think slowly, and hope the viewer will join him with a subtle smile.

Just painting! – it is not about storytelling, yet it does not reject the elements of story. If you think he is telling you stories about the common people in Hong Kong, well, his paintings can give you some very local scenes, but a clear plot is almost impossible, and he even throws away the key to any clues. You will be in a maze of stories, like inside a tram where both the scene and the characters are present, but that space just can’t be in a tram. You think that you might have witnessed something that has happened, but the real event simply slips away in front of your eyes. You need to look and think again. Every painting is a labyrinth. You stand in front of the painting and look intently at the people there, but the people inside are looking blankly at nobody. The painter himself will never give you an authoritative answer, for viewing painting, to him, is an experience of both equality and secret imagination.

Just hinting – sometimes the painter gives you an indication through the deliberately articulated images, but mostly he just shows you a road that leads to nowhere. He does not have any specific place to go, he just delights in walking in the city, observing and thinking about things around him. Maybe he will draw a few bauhinia trees. Why? - because there are some just outside the window of his studio. The subject of painting is always at hand, because whatever he paints, it all comes back to his meditation on painting. Occasionally he will use words to explain, but they are no more than indications, and most of the time, just hints. Do not bother to seek the ultimate meaning. The viewer perhaps sees more than the painter, as long as one is ready to throw away his or her preconceptions. Or better throw them into the painting, because his canvas is glad to dissolve all the self-righteous ideas.

Just pointing - a moment it looks like this, but another moment it looks otherwise. Is it a glass or a mirror? A reflected image or the original? Are people appearing at the other side of the transparent glass or in front of it? A plant is blooming by the window - is it an embodiment of melancholy or of a tranquil memory? No matter how intently you look at the painting, the painter probably points with his finger before you can even utter anything–it is just a painting! He will observe and respond to what is on the canvas, and let the images gradually emerge. When we think he is representing the multifaceted world, in the end it is just a painting that he presents. He plays with the rules of the history of painting, especially those of Western oil painting. He loves to have pictures within pictures, and frames outside of frames. Painting has such an embracing power that it is not merely a traditional medium, but has become, in the hands of Yeung, the essence of life and the focal point of thinking. It is also a game playing with the viewer, a visual joke to anyone who is ready to put aside utilitarian ideas and preconceptions about looking. Yeung likes to smile more than to talk, and even more, to smile subtly while pointing to his paintings.
