TST Waterfront 2: Change the railing?

2015/8/25 — 9:00

New World together with the LCSD propose to change the railing along the waterfront of Tsimshatsui – from the Cultural Centre down to Hung Hom. The objective is to make the promenade 70cm wider on both sides. But is it worth it?

Today, the railing is used by people to sit on. It is the longest public seat along the waterfront. It runs from the Star Ferry Pier to Hung Hom. And it is used by many people, especially at night. Should we trash it, and add this to our waste problem? Is it better to have more room to walk, and lose our seats?

The public has not been consulted on the design of the waterfront in TST. The Town Planning Board approved additional development including restaurants and foot decks, but not the design details. LCSD and New World have yet to agree the design and the management for the extended waterfront. Over the next days I will highlight some of the details. I urge the public to make sure these are discussed at the Kowloon Taskforce meeting of the Harbourfront Commission on 1 September 2015. The public should send their views to the Chairman and Members via [email protected].
