TST Waterfront 3: Who can use the promenade in the future?

2015/8/26 — 9:59

The public has not been consulted on the design of the waterfront in TST. The result is a narrow focus of the proposed facilities: They will work for some, but not for others.

Take the proposed entertainment area along the Tsimshatsui East promenade. The glass cinema may work for the movie industry, and the deck may work for tourists who walk across from the hotels, but does it work for dragon boat races, fireworks and other events?

Can the proposed deck function as a grand stand? Can the glass cinema be used as a changing room? Or, will the desk be closed during events as the Police will deem it unsafe for crowds? And glass walls are surely unsuitable for a changing room!

So what is the best way forward? There should be a public exhibition with a 3D model of the waterfront, a public forum with all the potential users, and a consultation before the design and the management plan are finalized.

The LCSD should not be allowed to entrust the promenade to NWD until it has listened to the community!

The Kowloon Taskforce of the Harbourfront Commission will discuss this project on 1 September 2015. The public should write to the Chairman and Members via [email protected] and demand a public consultation on the TST Waterfront. After all, that is the job of the Harbourfront Commission

Till then, I will use this column to highlight more details of the TST waterfront proposal.
