The BDSM scenes in Hong Kong and other countries are definitely very different. I have some experience in the scenes in London and Baltimore/Washington DC/Maryland in US, Tokyo and Manila. In fact, I would say that only Japan has got places that are really dedicated for BDSM. In the West, organizers will rent bars/clubs for events but usually those venues are not really dedicated for BDSM only (for example, Commander D in Taiwan)

Something very interesting about HK is – people all complain about the lack of venues for BDSM activities – but at  the same time people here are so conservative – so meaning I think what people want is not really public venues for BDSM parties – but more like private places for BDSM – which doesn't make sense to me because they can always book a hotel/motel room for that. It’s not like BDSM can only be done in dungeons…

Yes it’s true that there are not public venues for BDSM in HK but one thing good about it is that we get to stay underground. HK is not really THAT open-minded and there’s still fear regarding law enforcement and police. If we have a pubic venue for BDSM parties that allow everyone to come in – first there will be safety problems – you don’t know who’s coming in and whether they are safe and whether they just wanna get laid and leave – also public BDSM parties can easily turn into or be seen as a sex party and be raided by police. Look at the case of Fetish Fashion – it was raided by police – although at last everyone was acquitted – people still lost their job. The risk is just too high in HK – so personally I would say that it’s good that BDSM activities get to stay underground. It’s simply not realistic to step out. The LGBTI parade in HK does not really represent any BDSM group (although I know there are a few participants who are kinky) but stil as compared to Taiwan pride parade – there’s still a big difference. When the community is still so conservative – if you step out – basically you are putting your job on the line.

The reason why HK is so conservative – no one knows. People blame it on Chinese values – some on religious views. But honestly – I know tons of Christians/Catholics who are kinky. I don’t really think they play a big role here. Somehow I think it’s more about the butterfly effect – one person say it’s perverted – the next person echoes – they just repeat what others said without knowing what it is. Actually not only in BDSM – even in normal sex. If you talk about sex, sexuality, sex toys – first reaction is probably “ewwww you are so perverted”.

In fact – there are so many people who are curious about kink and BDSM – even those people who pretended they are not interested – actually deep inside they really want to try something out. In HK, the scene is not really only limited to the scene on Fetlife. Most people who go on Fetlife are Westerners – they might be travellers or exchange students, or they can be expats who just base in HK. But in fact, the BDSM scene in HK is MUCH bigger than that. There is a huge group of Cantonese people who are doing BDSM but they are very discreet. How they see and practice BDSM are very different as well.
