Of course it is political

No, not the decisions by the Judges. They followed and interpreted the Law as it is. And yes, the Secretary of Justice and his department have rights to appeal decisions by lower Courts. Legally, they did nothing wrong. Remember our laws are old colonial laws which give government a lot of powers, if they so choose to use them.
The clearly political decision was to use the law and seek more severe sentences The aim of the Central and Local Authorities is to achieve a greater deterrent effect. To stop people from being disobedient and break the law. People who have been denied their one person – one vote in the Legislative Council. And have been denied their rights to nominate and choose their Chief Executive.

The decision of when, who and what to ‘chase’ after using the law to its fullest is a political decision.

Government can stop real estate agents and private investigators who illegally hang banners with their phone numbers on it. Yes, but they don’t spend time on it. Maybe because resources are limited.

Other times they want to remain friends. Government could stop developers in the New Territories from trading ding rights. And they could force the removal of illegal building works. However, they may not consider it a priority.

But to put a large number of young kids in jail, was made a political priority. Instead of seeking better communications between the authorities and the politically engaged youth who aspire to safeguard Hong Kong’s freedoms. What a shame.
