We’re staff from Tai Kwun. We are aware that the passing of the controversial extradition bill will undoubtedly hamper Hong Kong’s freedom of expression. It is foreseeable that we will no longer be in a safe space to voice our thoughts on artworks. We fight for justice and freedom—the freedom of expression for everyone, and also for the art practitioners.

It saddens us to learn that there have been increasingly unjust incidents taking place throughout June and July. Numerous innocent civilians got beaten up by triads in Yuen Long on 21 July. Worse still, the police deployed tear gas, rubber bullets and sponge grenades to disperse the protesters in Sheung Wan in the same evening. It further haunts us to know that the anti-mob violence protest in Yuen Long on Saturday and anti-police violence protest yesterday ended up with violent suppression by the police. Nonetheless, the Hong Kong government continues to turn a blind eye to violence as well as people’s voice, refusing to bear any responsibility and condemning the protesters.

As staff from various governmental departments, West Kowloon Cultural District and M+ have spoken up, we, as part of the local art field, aspire to make a statement in response to their condemnation of atrocity and refusal to silence. We are hoping our little steps could arouse more our counterparts’ eagerness in the local arts field to declare the stance for freedom.

We reiterate our five demands to the HKSAR government:

Complete withdrawal of the extradition bill
Withdraw the definition of ‘Riot’ on all demonstrations
Unconditional release of all arrested protesters
Formation of an independent commission to investigate the misconduct and power abuse of the police
Implement universal suffrage

Tai Kwun Staff who believes in justice, righteousness and freedom
