A Speech at Stockholm Anti-totalitarianism Rally

I hope right now, this scene is alarming enough for you. I live in Sweden, I’m standing among you, yet I’m too afraid to deliver this message to you myself as it will put myself and my family as risk if I am recognized. This is how bad the situation is.

My fake name is Aliye, which means wisdom in the Uyghur language. I was born and raised in Xinjiang, and I arrived in Sweden several years ago.

You may hear “China is holding approximately 1.5 million ethnic minority in concentration camps”, it sounds like a story from far away or about 90 years ago.

Actually, people affected by this brutal act are standing among you. Someone driving your bus, making your food, or walking by your side on the street, may have their family members held in China’s concentration camps right now.

My parents were taken to the camps in winter of 2018. And winter in Sweden is definitely not a good time to handle bad news.

I almost forgot how I survived that, but I remember the feeling. Sitting on a bus or walking in an ICA, looking at people around me, feeling surreal. It was winter in Sweden, yet everything felt extremely bright. Too bright, my eyes hurt.

Darkest days of my life.

I believe no human being should suffer my suffering. And I have to make my suffering mean something, I can’t go through hell for nothing. That’s why I’m here standing quietly among you.

That’s why I support the Hong Kong protests. That’s why I completely understand protesters in Hong Kong, even when they have to be violent, even when they make mistakes. Because I know exactly what they’re afraid of, they are fighting so they don’t become me. And if I had a chance to fight, I’d fight till I win or die.

I’m also here to warn you, all of you, people of Sweden, people of Hong Kong, people all over the world. I’m here to warn you, the Chinese government, the Chinese communist party, is the enemy of freedom, is the enemy of human dignity. Its war against freedom doesn’t stop in Tibet and Xinjiang, it won’t stop in Hong Kong and Taiwan. It’s already capable of kidnaping a Swedish citizen from Thailand, it’s holding two Canadian citizens in prison for doing nothing wrong.

China turned Xinjiang into an open-air prison, using technology developed in cooperation with US and European universities, using equipment manufactured with investment from the free world. On the other hand, China is building forced labour factories next to or inside Xinjiang’s concentration camps, turning ethnic cleansing into a profitable business. Forced labour factories are processing cotton for your H&M t-shirts and IKEA towels.

Using money from the free world to oppress minority rights or making people in the free world wear products made by forced labour. One way or another, China is using your money to harm you.

I’m not here to ask you to help us. It’s not about us anymore. A totalitarian regime affects everyone, every single one of us. Your freedom is under threat, your freedom is under threat, your freedom is under threat, and guess what, your freedom is under threat, too!

Here’s what you can do. Hold your elected officials accountable when they are handling Chinese investment. Ask your universities to be aware of surveillance in China in their artificial intelligence studies. Tell companies like H&M and Ikea to check their supply chain so you won’t end up in bed with modern day slavery.

Most importantly, inform yourself. Google it, watch videos, read the news. You are here because you support people’s fight for freedom, I hope you leave here ready to fight for your own freedom.

Thank you.
