A couple of years ago, I was in a car with my father, mother, and little brother driving down the Eastern section of Tai Tam Road to go home. A storm had just passed. The road was wet. The night was dark.

Suddenly, we heard a loud crack, and then a thud. We turned around and saw that a gigantic tree had fallen.

Had my father driven slower, the car would have been crushed under the weight of its wood.

My family narrowly escaped death. We were breathless.

Yet, never did we think to write a complaint to the government (specifically, the Orwellian "Office of Trees" 樹木辦) citing poor municipal management of trees.

This is nature. I am grateful to the jungle surrounding my home. Its leaves give life to the air I breathe. Its beauty inspires me when I wake up and see it growing wild outside my window.

People die. This is life.

So when the Office of Trees decides to pre-emptively chop down four century-old banyan trees in the middle of the night after a woman was recently injured by a fallen tree, I wonder why we have an Office of Trees in the first place. By definition, isn’t it impossible to tame the wilderness, just as it is impossible to control the hearts and minds of the humans who once lived in harmony with it?

I don't think nature should be safe. I don't think nature should be managed.

Nature should be mysterious, dangerous, and free.

What humans should aspire to be once more.
