LAW SOCIETY COUNCIL ELECTIONS RESULTS - MESSAGE TO FELLOW SOLICITORS

Dear Fellow Solicitors,

As I found out the results as set out below, I burst out uncontrollably in tears at home. This is the second time (the first time being the August 2014 Law Society EGM) that your deeds have made me cry tears of gratitude. In short, you guys are so adorable!

This result belongs to you. Without your efforts in coming out to vote by post, by proxy or in person, this result would not have been possible.

To the 5 duly and newly elected Council members, I congratulate you all on your victory. You now carry the hopes and expectations of our profession in the coming years. I hope you will carry out your task with the best interests of the profession at heart, and make every effort to keep the Law Society non-political. In recommending a list of candidates for whom members may consider voting, those of you in the list included individuals with vastly different politics views to mine. I am glad that our profession has, through these results, put professional considerations above political considerations.

To the candidates who were not elected, let us all thank them for their participation. A contested election is what gives solicitors genuine choice in deciding on their representatives.

As for Mr Junius Ho, whatever I or others of you may have thought about his suitability for another term on the Council, I now call on everyone NOT to "sink the boot in" or express any sense of schadenfreude over his non-election.

Mr Ho has devoted over 20 years of his life in service to the profession through the Law Society Council. This fact alone deserves our respect. Celebrating the victories of one's preferred candidates does NOT mean that one should somehow "celebrate" Mr Ho's non-election with any sense of spite or malice. A person who has performed long service on the Council deserves better than that. Just as importantly, I would like to believe that the better angels of our natures are better than that.

Once again, a huge thanks to all of you for performing yet another miracle within the space of three years. I love you all. Thank you, God bless you, God bless all the candidates in this election, God bless the Law Society, and God bless Hong Kong.
